100th Maverick Club 4th of July Rodeo

Posted on: May 23rd, 2023 by Lance Cowan

Join us for a weekend of fun! The Maverick Club Rodeo is a great time for young and old—experienced cowboys and those who have never attended a rodeo event before.   All events take place at the Maverick Rodeo Grounds unless otherwise noted.  There is a town parade before the rodeo along Highway 64 starting at 9am.

MAVERICK CLUB HISTORY
In 1922, the maverick Club was organized by 50 prominent citizens of Cimarron. The purpose of the club involved social, civic and educational objectives. They used the term “Maverick” to denote the group of “strays” who felt they did not fit the mold of the typical service groups in the area. Besides, they weren’t sure if they could be branded by others’ rules. There were no membership dues, and once a man joined, he was a Maverick for life.

On July 4, 1923, the newly formed club sponsored its first rodeo for the community. It has become an annual event held continuously for more than seven decades. The Maverick Club also participates in charitable activities and hosts an annual Ladies Night Dinner and Dance for the wives and girlfriends of Maverick Club members.

The Hugh Glass Rendezvous

Posted on: May 23rd, 2023 by Lance Cowan

Take a step back in history nearly two centuries and walk upon the site where history was made, where the man became a legend, as we celebrate Hugh Glass Rendezvous in the banks of the Grand River and Shadehill Reservoir, at Hugh Glass Park.

The event will include the primitive mountain man rendezvous camp, unique black powder shoots, hawk throws and primitive archery, a prairie church service and extraordinary bicentennial youth day. Experience Lemmon’s local history first-hand through special presentations, speakers, and musical entertainment.

Join us as we remember the amazing story of Hugh Glass and his trek back to civilization 200 years later. With the wealth of local history in Western South Dakota and the release of Hollywood’s take on Glass with Alejandro Iñárritu’s critically acclaimed The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio, there’s no better time to take a trip into the past.

The Hugh Glass Rendezvous’ goal is to recognize those early frontiersman that contributed to the rich history in NW SD; especially the life and tragedy which Hugh Glass faced after being attacked by a grizzly bear.
